Captain, Pro, Secretary & Greenkeeper - Dooks Golf Club May 8th 2017
While the attendance at Dooks was lower than last year at Lahinch, it was those who didn’t appear that really lost out. On a day when the sun shone all day and a light breeze enveloped the course, Dooks asked all the questions of the 13 teams participating. Thankfully the rough was low, due to the dry spell currently being experienced, yet accuracy off the tee was still paramount. The greens, as one would expect, were in excellent condition with run offs adding to the problem if one went even a small bit astray with approach shots. Some teams regretfully did not do so well but yet were effusive in their praise of the course and the scenery. Dooks has that effect on you.
The early birds really caught the worm on this occasion. Brian Hurley led his Portmarnock team with typical aplomb, skill and modesty. Only that Declan Mangan asked him for the card, Brian had no intention of putting it in as he thought it was no good. Just shows you!. Brian’s team had two players off scratch, (himself & Francis Howley) Course Superintendent Gary Johnstone off 1 and the Captain Fergus Bolger off 12. They scored 81 points. Superb golf under any circumstances. Well done Guys. Of course having been out first they were long gone
by the time we got around to presenting prizes so we asked Nick Brown from Textron Golf, who was part of the sponsorship team of
Brodericks, to accept the trophy on behalf of Brian and his team, as he knows him quite well.
