About The CGI
The CGI is an organisation, created by the GUI, ILGU and the PGA to help advance the sport of golf on the island of Ireland, for the future.
The CGI complements the work of the associations as well as providing a necessary combined approach to certain key strategic areas in the future development of golf in Ireland.
The leaders of the Golfing Union of Ireland (GUI), the Irish Ladies Golf Union (ILGU) and the Professional Golfers Association (Irish Region) have agreed on a new strategy for golf in Ireland that will ensure the three organisations are positioned to meet new opportunities and challenges facing the game in Ireland over the next 8 years. The process is supported by the Irish Sports Council (ISC) and Sport Northern Ireland (SNI).
The three golf organisations examined how they can work together to achieve shared objectives including: increasing participation, continuing international success, developing a common plan for high performance for the 2016 and 2020 Olympic Games and looking at the programmes, services and support required to develop players in Ireland from junior through to elite level.
The CGI is a unique response to the current challenges and opportunities confronting golf in Ireland, as it is one organisation that will represent all golfers on the island of Ireland – be they young or old, male or female, amateur or professional, north or south of the border.
CGI’s 2020 Vision:
- Golf Clubs and the CGI acting in full and committed partnership to grow the game on the island of Ireland
- An increase in the number of golf club members
- An increase in the number of junior members of golf clubs since the establishment of the CGI
- An increase in the percentage of golf club members who are female
- A strong perception of golf as an open and accessible public sport
In order to ensure the realisation of the CGI’s 2020 Vision, the Development Plan will be carried out in two phases. In Phase 1, the CGI has set targets in four key areas – the launch and dissemination of the Development Plan, the rolling out of initiatives to help golf clubs recruit and retain members, the promotion of the activities of the CGI through an advertising campaign and the development and provision of the suite of club services for golf clubs.
At the end of 2016, a mid-term review of Phase 1 will be undertaken and a revised Phase 2 implementation plan will be drawn up to ensure the fulfilment of the CGI’s 2020 Vision.
